"I feel sick because I have sores in my mouth. It hurts"
Princess was sick with a fever and horrible mouth sores for 6 days. She missed the entire week of school. On top of that, I worked 24-hour shifts on Tuesday and Friday, and Drummer Boy was out of town Wednesday and Thursday. I was exhausted from work, more exhausted from taking care of a sick child, and even more exhausted from single-motherhood. It was not good. I have to say I was the worst nurse-mom ever!!! Princess is not as compliant as the newborn patients I usually have. I'm not used to my patient saying, "I don't want that medicine. It tastes bad!!!" I was so frustrated and not very understanding and my brain and body were just so tired that I didn't have any extra patience or good ideas. I failed as a nurse-mom. Thankfully, I have some very sweet friends that checked in on us, and one who dropped by a goody-bag for Princess. She really enjoyed painting a couple of little plaster animals one afternoon.
I'm glad to say that we survived the week and Princess is much better. Of course, if it were up to me, I'd choose to never have to go through that again, but given that I have two girls in school and kids spread germs like wildfire, I'm sure there are many more opportunities for me to practice my nursing skills at home in my future. I just hope I'm a little better at it next time.
